Do It All By Yourself

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

It’s, finally, happened y’all. After two years of really figuring out how to bring these videos to life, they are here live on YouTube. Subscribe to my channel: thymaihair to instantly get updates on new tips! I do plan on continuing to make them.

I was inspired to do this, because I love teaching you how to replicate styles. I found myself, teaching the same lessons and that it was easy to forget what I had said once you got home. And it grew from there…

I am so thankful to be able to do what I love and share it with you. I’m most thankful to the team who made it possible! Shout out time. I, highly, recommend any of these professionals for your own business needs.

Wing Ko, Randal Kirk and Samrod Shenassa for camera. It’s definitely not easy to light hair, shoot and film in an artistic style!

Kyle Sherman for direction and editing. He has a great radio show KSL online. Check it out!

Joshua Heath for the funky fresh music. Greg Kupiec and his team at The Ether design for the ridiculously amazing graphics.

Camila Martins for helping with props. Isabella Che for letting us use her studio to film. Tadashi Suzuki for all the support and food!!

These videos look fantastic on the Iphone! If you have one, it is amazing to have the tutorial play on your phone propped in front of the mirror, while you are doing your hair.

Holiday Hangover

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

The HangoverThe Hangover is, quite, possibliy, this Holiday season’s greatest at-home movie watch. It’s sooo funny. It’s nice to get all cozy on the couch and laugh. Just a recommendation.

But now, it’s Sunday after the Holiday week, and my brain is completely mush and I, still, feel hungover from all the family and festivities. But, yet, I still try to mull over in my mind, what it is that I can do to snap out of Holiday snooze mode and kick back up into high gear, in time to welcome the New Year with a BIG “HURRAH!”, all the while, remembering that it’s okay to step back and decompress from the year. Just simply rambling!

Pity, we, only, get a week to work on this mindset and we have to do our normal duties on top of it. But it’s possible! I believe we can, both, let our physical bodies rest and polish up the brains and insides with some reading.

I don’t care what anyone says, but I am a big fan of reading self-help books with a leave-in conditioner in my hair or a mask on my face. It’s the best way to talk it out with yourself, without a therapist, who isn’t with you 24/7, and without subjecting your friends to a never-ending, re-hashing of the same events. I’ll share with you some things that help me in the next posts.

Pamper time! Maybe, what I find helpful, can help you gear up for the new decade!

Fade to Black

a single manOh Tom Ford! How I love thee. I was lucky enough to see the writer’s screening of “A Single Man” last night, that was followed up with a Q & A with the man, himself.

I have been waiting for this, almost three years, since Tom left Gucci. Daniel and everyone around me knew of my obsession of this man, second only to Vidal. I prayed that it would be a visual and emotional masterpiece. I hoped that he would be as lovely as I imagined.

I wasn’t let down, my friends. In fact, I’m still giddy with inspiration. Check out the trailer if it sparks your interest. I think it’s more fun to go cold turkey. It’s an emotional journey. Sometimes, we need to think and decide and anticipate what’s happening in a film. Colin Firth and Julianne Moore are sooo fabulous. If you can’t seem to put your finger on who the young man is in the story, he’s the star of “About A Boy,” all grown-up!

This film opens December 11! Mark your calendars!!! Texans, support! He grew up in Austin!! His Q & A will be available as a podcast.

Where the Wild Things AreI did it. I went and saw “Where the Wild Things Are” on opening weekend at the Arc Light. I prescribed myself the full Hollywood Cinematic Treatment. (Wink, Wink, Nudge, Nudge, Smack, Smack…)

Anyways, off that tangent, I found it a visual sensation! Having grown up reading the book, repetitively, I was in shock at how well the puppets matched the monsters in my memory! I was in that amazing set and embarked on the emotional ride. As I have gotten older, it’s as though my memory of the childhood angst had faded. The validity of my emotions at youth paled in comparison to my current frustration as an adult…

Uh, wrong-o, Thy. It took me vividly back to that moment. It shook me to clarity of the notion that I felt very deeply and immensely as a child, and its subsequent shaping of my character.

Had to catch my breath after the epic bursts of secret social commentary, but I liked it! Sometimes, it’s hard to be a kid! Oh, the restaurant at the Arc Light is super yum!

Oh Audrey!

AudreyHepburnThe LACMA is doing screenings of Audrey Hepburn classics this Friday Oct. 23 and Saturday Oct. 24 (around 7:30 and 9:30) for a chill price!!!

What girl doesn’t love Audrey Hepburn and wish she could insert herself into the myriad of fabulous scenes? To this day, I still use her as inspiration, when my lovely clients want that classic and beautiful look. Her fringe i.e. “bangs” in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is still imitated–never replicated. Hats off to that talented hair stylist!
They All Laughed

John RitterFriday night is great, as Peter Bogdanovich will be giving the introduction. A legend in his own right, it makes it more enticing! On a sentimental note, the second show of Peter’s film, “They All Laughed,” also, stars the late Dorothy Stratten and John Ritter, alongside Audrey. They bring such charm to this film!

Valentino MovieValentino: The Last Emperor is available to buy! Woo Hoo!

When I went to see this in the theatre, I wanted to jump into the screen! I was upset and went through withdrawals, immediately, during the credits.

This is a beautiful glimpse into a devotion and into an era of fashion that will never be again. All I can say is “that was one hell of a party!”

Buy it. Watch it. Watch it again.

Inglourious BasterdsI must preface by saying that I am a huge Quentin Tarantino fan.  It was difficult to figure out a time my friends and I could go the the movies and harder to find a block of time where we could enjoy the longer show, but through sheer determination to see it, before it was no longer on the big screen, we made it tonight!

I must, also, say that it hardly felt like many hours had passed, by the time the credits were rolling. If you are a fan of Quentin’s or have liked some of his body of work, I know you’ll enjoy it.

My favorite parts were the foreign language, the coloring of the film (looks like cross-processed photos), the costumes and the fact that there were strong and charming female characters. The only negative was the guy that decided to answer his phone and have a conversation– after a long ring tone (set to bad trance), during the film! So awful. Manners! Manners!
